Proofwire vs ZeroBounce
This is the comparison where we have the least to argue with. ZeroBounce is a mature email validation product that already does the thing we make the most noise about - credits that never expire - and has years of customers we do not. Here is where we actually differ, and where we do not.
How to read this page. 8 dimensions compared: we come out ahead on 4, behind on 2. Every claim about ZeroBounce links to their own documentation or to public reviews. We have not run ZeroBounce through our own benchmark, so you will not find a head-to-head accuracy number here — comparing our measurement to someone else's would not be a comparison.
Choose ZeroBounce if
- Email deliverability is the whole job, and you want the surrounding tools: list scoring, blacklist monitoring, inbox placement testing.
- You need an established vendor with references, integrations and a support organisation. We are new and that is a real difference.
- You are cleaning large marketing lists, which is the workflow they have spent years refining.
Choose Proofwire if
- You need phone and IP alongside email, on one balance rather than three vendors.
- You want to see why a verdict came out the way it did, not only what it was.
- You would rather not be charged when the answer is genuinely unknowable.
Side by side
| Dimension | ZeroBounce | Proofwire | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit expiry | Credits roll over and do not expire | Credits never expire | Vendor documentation |
| Track record in email | Years of operation, a large customer base and an established support organisation | New. No references, no track record. Weigh this honestly. | — |
| Deliverability tooling around validation | List scoring, blacklist monitoring, inbox placement testing | None of it. We validate; we do not manage your sending programme. | Vendor documentation |
| Subjects covered | Email, with some adjacent tools | Phone, email and IP on a single shared balance | — |
| Evidence behind a verdict | A status and a sub-status code | Every signal, its contribution, its age, and which providers were skipped and why | — |
| Inconclusive results | Returned as a status like catch-all or unknown, and billed as a lookup | Returned as `unknown` and never billed | — |
| Published accuracy methodology | Accuracy claims without a public dataset, as is standard in this category | A labelled dataset that ships with the source, with structural and network accuracy reported separately | — |
| Free tier | A monthly free allowance for account holders | 100 credits with no time limit, plus 40 tools that need no account at all | — |
They already do the thing we complain about others not doing
Our loudest promise is that credits do not expire, and ZeroBounce has that too. It is worth saying plainly rather than quietly leaving it off the table, because it is the single most resented mechanic in this category - NeverBounce introducing a one-year expiry in fine print produced years of complaints - and ZeroBounce not doing it is a point in their favour, not a coincidence we can take credit for.
Where we genuinely differ: what the answer looks like
A ZeroBounce result is a status and a sub-status - "catch-all", "unknown", "do_not_mail". Those are useful and correctly named. What they do not tell you is why, or how confident the system was, or how old the data behind it was. Our result carries every signal that produced it, weighted and dated. For a marketing list that difference is academic. For a decision somebody may question later, it is the difference between a verdict you can defend and one you can only repeat.
And what happens when the answer is unknowable
A catch-all domain accepts mail for every address, so no probe can establish whether one particular mailbox exists. Both products correctly report that state. The difference is the invoice: theirs counts it as a lookup, ours does not. This costs us money on every such call and we do it anyway, because charging for an answer nobody can stand behind is what made this category worth entering.
What we are not
ZeroBounce is a deliverability platform: list scoring, blacklist monitoring, inbox placement. We are a validation API with three subjects and no ambition to become the rest of it. If your problem is "my campaigns land in spam", they have tools for that and we have none. Buying us for that job would be a mistake, and we would rather you knew before than after.
Questions
You concede a lot on this page. Why?
Because it is true, and because a comparison where the vendor wins every row is an advertisement. ZeroBounce is a mature product that is genuinely better than us at several things. The rule is enforced in our source: a build-time audit fails if any comparison page has no row favouring the competitor.
Have you benchmarked ZeroBounce against your dataset?
No, and we will not quote a head-to-head accuracy figure we have not measured. Our benchmark measures our engine; the dataset and the command are published so you can run it yourself.
Can I use both?
Yes, and for some teams that is the right answer: ZeroBounce for bulk list hygiene, us for the real-time decisions where you need to see the reasoning and want phone and IP on the same balance.
Check it yourself
Do not take our word for any of this. Run our public benchmark with npm run bench, read the labelled dataset it ships with, or try the free tools without an account.
