A recovered signup, not a rejected one
Most validators return "invalid" and stop. That is technically correct and commercially useless: the user is gone, and they think they signed up. Returning the correction lets you prompt "did you mean user@gmail.com?" while they are still on the page - which is the difference between a lost lead and a confirmed one.
Why not fix it silently
Because you would occasionally be wrong, and silently changing someone contact details is worse than asking. Suggest, do not substitute.
