Free email provider checker

A Gmail address and a company address carry different information. Neither is better, and treating them the same is how a B2B signup form fills up with addresses nobody can attribute to an organisation.

What a consumer address tells you, and what it does not

It tells you the address is not attributable to an organisation, which matters if your product is sold to companies and your pricing depends on which one. It does not tell you the person is less serious, less likely to pay, or worth less: plenty of founders, consultants and one-person businesses run on a consumer mailbox, and rejecting them at signup is a policy that quietly removes a segment nobody meant to exclude.

Blocking is usually the wrong response

The common implementation — refuse consumer domains at signup — costs real customers to stop a problem that was better handled elsewhere. If the concern is trial abuse, check for disposable domains, which is a different and much narrower list. If the concern is attribution, ask for the company name. If the concern is billing, verify at payment. Each of those is cheaper than turning people away at the door.

Questions

Is a free provider the same as a disposable one?

No, and conflating them is the frequent mistake. Gmail is a permanent mailbox somebody reads for years; a disposable domain hands out addresses that expire in ten minutes. Block the second if you must, and think hard before blocking the first.

How current is the list?

It is bundled with the product and covers the providers that account for the overwhelming majority of consumer mail. It is not exhaustive, and a domain not on it is simply not recognised rather than proven to be a company.
