VoIP or mobile? Line type checker
Telling a VoIP line from a mobile matters if you send SMS, screen signups for fraud, or pay per dial. It is also the single check the cheap validation APIs are worst at.

Why this is hard
The libphonenumber metadata most validators build on carries no line-type information for North America at all: it reports "unknown" for every US and Canadian number. Rather than say so, many APIs guess "mobile" - and an independent 2026 benchmark found one popular provider mislabelling VoIP as mobile in roughly one case out of four.
What this tool does instead
It checks the area code against overlay ranges dominated by VoIP resellers and returns an honest confidence figure rather than a guess dressed as a fact. Below about 70% confidence, treat the answer as a hint. Certainty requires querying the carrier network, which the paid API does.
Questions
Why does VoIP matter?
VoIP numbers are cheap and disposable, which makes them common in signup fraud. They also behave differently for SMS delivery and are treated differently under some calling regulations.
Can a VoIP number be legitimate?
Very often. Millions of businesses and individuals use VoIP as their main line. Treat it as one signal among several, not as a reason to block.
